Web Rage - Frustration on the Internet
Asides takes a lighter look
at news, views, or events that may (or may not) impact our wide
world of data conversion, publishing, technical documentation, and
eBooks.
On average, "web rage"
takes place after about 12 minutes of fruitless searching. But,
some people will "blow their tops" at the 3 minute
mark. So says polling organization Roper Starch Worldwide,
who surveyed 566 people, and found a lot of frustration in searching
the World Wide Web.
About 86% of Internet users felt
that there should be a more efficient way to search the Web for
accurate information, and some 71% became frustrated regardless
of whether they are successful in their search or not.
The main culprit is all that information
out there, with some 1.3 billion web pages available to view, according
to search engine Google.com. And, the Web will get even more
crowded, when seven new domain names, such as .biz, .info, and .aero,
start rolling out this year. For details on the newly approved
domain names see: http://www.vnunet.com/News/1114179.
Another survey finding: more than
half (about 54%) of those using search engines don't get frustrated
by wrong results. "Maybe that underscores the fact that
a majority expects to get wrong information," says Danny Sullivan,
editor of SearchEngineWatch.com. For more about the search
for better search engines and additional survey results, see Ben
Charny's story for ZDNet News, December 23, 2000, at: http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/news/0,4586,2667216,00.html.

Seven New Domain
Names Approved
In late November, seven
of the 44 proposed new Web domain names were approved
by the Internet’s naming body (Icann, the Internet Corporation
for Assigned Names and Numbers). The new names
will be available in mid-2001. The following domains
will be added to the existing list that includes .com, .net, .org and .gov:
