Microsoft Loses i4i Patent Case—Again
December 2009: cnet.com, outsidethebeltway.com

In an update to a story that appeared in the DCLNews September 2009 issue ("XML Gets Ugly"), Microsoft has lost its appeal of a federal court's finding that the software giant violated the copyright of small tech company i4i. Microsoft allegedly borrowed i4i's custom XML technology without permission, including it as a feature in Microsoft Word 2007. Following the appeals court's decision, Microsoft has agreed to remove the code from copies of Word 2007 sold after January 11, 2010, as well as from all subsequent Word releases. The ruling also means that Microsoft can expect to pay around $290 million in damages and other fees.

Google Goggles Search by Sight
December 2009: cnn.com

Ever been in a situation where you see something that piques your curiosity, but you can't look it up because you don't know what it is? Google has come up with the perfect solution to this catch-22. Media Mogul Murdoch Afraid of Spiders
December 2009: csmonitor.com

Call him old-fashioned, or maybe just arachnophobic: press baron Rupert Murdoch recently announced that huge media conglomerate News Corp. will begin hiding its sites from Google's indexing spiders. But why would anyone snub the estimated 100,000 clicks-per-minute generated by Google News? For Murdoch, it's not a matter of quantity, but of quality: "We'd rather have fewer people coming to our Web sites but paying," said the press baron. Google, for its part, seems unconcerned.

E-Books: Obsolete Already?
December 2009: fastcompany.com

Adam Penenberg predicts that e-books are only a stepping stone bridging the gap between traditional, tangible reading material and the books of the future. Soon, Penenberg predicts, "mere words on a page may feel a bit lifeless"; readers will expect more from their books, which will evolve to provide an interactive multimedia experience. Much more than words on a page, the books of the future will be dynamic, linked to social media, and so updateable that they become "living, breathing, works of art."
