- Use JPEG for scanned photos, and continuous-tone artwork (lots of smooth variations in colors) (typically 10:1 compression, vs. 3-4:1 for GIF).
- For text pages, line drawings, and cartoons, use GIF.
- For large areas of exactly the same color, use GIF.
- For images with lots of sharp edges (or text), JPEG tends to blur, use GIF.
- For plain black and white or very few grays, don’t use JPEG.
- Use GIF if you need transparency.
