Game On: iPad’s Got Competition

It looks as though the iPad’s brief stint as the only must-have tablet device on the market may be coming to an end as competitors begin announcing their new “iPad-killers.”
LG’s Optimus isn’t due until late 2010, but the company’s vice president of marketing for mobile-devices is already boasting that the Android tablet’s “high-end features and new benefits” will be “better than the iPad” — though he stopped short of offering any details.
CNET, on the other hand, is predicting that iPad’s competition will shape up much as iPhone’s competition has, and that it will be Motorola who will produce the ultimate iPad-killer, just as its Android-OS DroidX was able to snag a large share of the iPhone market over the summer.
But no matter who claims the crown of “iPad killer,” don’t expect the iPad to be going anywhere soon — in fact, the very title “iPad killer” is likely an overstatement, since carving off even a relatively small chunk of Apple’s nearly-total market share would be considered a great success for any of its competitors. And no matter what LG, Motorola, or other companies come up with, the iPad can still lay proud claim to the hearts and hands of the sumo wrestling community.
