Recorded Interview

Content Sharing at Redback -
Lessons Learned

Don Bridges of DCL, interviews Indira Rimkeit of Redback Networks

Redback Networks wanted to start small and first focus on the ideas of sharing content—among writers, among products, and among outputs—before committing to something as ominous sounding as Enterprise Content Management. So they limited their project to tech pubs to help guarantee a success before moving on to other types of content. And it worked!

Listen to Don Bridges’s interview with the Content Sharing Project lead, Indira Rimkeit of Redback Networks, to learn how they did it.

                      Interview highlights

NOTE: Time marks (in red) following the quotes refer to location in the recording

"We started a project called the content sharing project, rather than CMS because we didn't want the whole company to get involved in the beginning. We've limited it strictly to tech pubs." (00:40)

"We had Data Conversion Laboratory do a content audit for us to show what the potential reuse was in our content. We found that the possible reuse was 56%, which is pretty high. (02:23) "

"Another thing (about XML) that will really benefit us is the ability to create new books that combine various features that are now in very large reference books but could be pulled out and made into more focused guides (for) one product instead of covering all of the platforms. That is only possible now with our new structured environment (06:27) "

"The real trigger that started this whole project was the goal to free up the writers from having to maintain updates of little content snippets. We're really hoping that that will make a big difference in our ability to create content faster and do a new release much faster. (07:10) "

"When we converted the documentation, I think we must have been awfully naïve and we thought we could do it in 10 days. We had automation prepared and we had a team of people to do it but it took us 6 weeks. But, we did it and it's complete. (08:48) "
