Boom
for
Data Conversion Laboratory
Data Conversion Laboratory is featured in a Publisher’s
Weekly’s ePublishing profile, written by Calvin Reid, for its October 23rd
issue.
(Please note that the company name was erroneously listed in the
article as Data Conversion Laboratories.)
As a leader in converting and
repurposing content for digital distribution for book and journal publishers,
Data Conversion Laboratory is readying for an ePublishing conversion boom. DCL has developed a proprietary electronic
markup system and an online procedure to automate and speed up the process of
data conversions as well as a Web-based reporting system for tracking project
status (named DC Tracker).
Data Conversion Laboratory is best known for its work in converting
complex Scientific, Technical and Medical (STM) books and journals for digital
distribution. It has gained extensive
experience in its 19-year-old history of successfully transforming graphs,
tables, and other challenging content for STM publishers, as well as for the
military, government, industry, and libraries.
“We feel a strong need to retool
our conversion process to quickly deliver finished text that can be used in any
of the most popular e-book formats,” says Mark Gross, DCL’s president and founder. Turnaround time for text conversion has now
been reduced to “…a matter of days, and we need to be able to do it in hours,”
says Gross. The company’s new
infrastructure automates about 95% of the process of conversion, and begins
with its Web interface for DCL customers that allows them to log on to place
orders for conversions and tick off what they want done.
