EDITORIALCompany DescriptionData Conversion Laboratory (DCL) is the nation's leading data conversion service bureau. Located in New York, DCL is expert at capturing, converting, and tagging text and images from all sources. With particular expertise in SGML and XML, the company is instrumental in some of the largest, most complex conversion projects in the world. Role and ResponsibilityDCL clients typically need to publish online, materials that were authored in traditional publishing packages such as Quark, PageMaker and FrameMaker. These formats must be converted to markup languages in order to be displayed on the Internet. DCL's primary function is to prepare such materials for electronic publishing, by converting to formats such as SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language), XML and HTML. We also produce many other electronic publishing formats. The Editor at DCL augments this process by reviewing materials that have been automatically converted (by software packages developed at DCL) and by correcting structural and formatting problems that might impact final publication. Because editors focus on structure and usually do not alter content, they can quickly become proficient at analyzing and editing all types of data structures. Detail-oriented, team players with superior communications skills excel in DCL's editorial department. Computer proficiency is an absolute must, as is an ability to meet tight deadlines. Editorial Roles DCL's hires people with varying levels of experience for its editorial department. The company has in place, an infrastructure that allows our people to gain the experience required to accomplish these tasks, while providing dynamic career opportunities. The following are the four main levels within the editorial department: INTERN EDITOR: The Intern Editor is the only position with an implied "time limit," normally a six month training period, at the end of which, the editor should be qualified to become an Associate Editor. The Intern Editor is responsible for learning and mastering the procedures for reviewing and modifying documents, making changes as necessary in order to satisfy client requirements. This work primarily involves the learning of SGML/XML including: elementary data structure, Document Type Definition (DTD) structure, SGML validating, SGML viewing, as well as the electronic tools that accomplish this work. The Intern Editor must be proficient in personal computer use and have a familiarity with word processing, text editing, and Microsoft Windows. ASSOCIATE EDITOR: The Associate Editor requires limited supervision in the accomplishment of his/her work load and is familiar with the tools that assist in that accomplishment. This work is primarily with SGML validating and viewing tools, though the Associate Editor may be required to learn other electronic publishing packages, should a project require it. The Associate Editor will be able to correct all but the most complex of validation errors with little direct supervision. In addition, the Associate Editor will meet the requirements described in the "Personal" and "Technical" qualifications sections of this document. SENIOR EDITOR: The Senior Editor must be able to accomplish her/his work load independently. This requires that the editor have amassed the experience and attained the skill level that allows for the demonstration of that ability clearly and consistently. The work load consists primarily of SGML validating and viewing tools, but will include other electronic publishing packages. Normally, the Senior Editor will have superior XML/SGML skills, including a mastery of reading and understanding DTD structure and syntax. The Senior Editor will have a level of understanding of SGML that allows for the corrections of all SGML validation errors, regardless of complexity. In addition, the Senior Editor will meet the requirements described in the "Personal" and "Technical" qualifications sections of this document. SUPERVISORY EDITOR: The primary function of the Supervisory Editor is to provide supervision and direction to all editors on the project team. Supervisory Editors evaluate and report on project progress and serve as the senior points of information from the Editorial Unit. Supervisory Editors also review and modify converted documents, making changes as necessary in order to satisfy client requirements. This work is primarily with SGML validating and viewing tools, but will include other electronic publishing packages. The Supervisory Editor will be sufficiently skilled as to be able to correct all validation errors, regardless of complexity and will require no supervision in the accomplishment of her/his work load.
